Geof Hirst is turning 70 this December and he commissioned a custom type treatment for the invitation. I started by hand drawing the design, I then scanned and vectorised it, cut it out of matt black vinyl, and applied it to the front of a folded sheet of black card.
This short time lapse video documents the process from design sketch to final card. I used Adobe Illustrator to vectorise the hand drawn design and my KNK cutter to laser cut the vinyl stickers. 50 cards were made in total. 1000s of screenshots later, you can spend an evening with me in Adobe Illustrator looking over my shoulder in just 3 minutes. Enjoy!

Thanks for the video! Its really amazing.
Thanks Kelvin. Glad you like it.
These invitations are stunning, thank you so much for sharing your process. I have just discovered your work and it is really fantastic!
Have seen some of your work and I am impressed.
Geof, I love it. Thanks for sharing your video too! I am wondering what you used to “vectorize” your scanned illustration in AI. Did you draw it by hand with the pen tool? Or is there some kind of tracing tool that helps? OR? I usually end up drawing in ink by hand, then scanning and touching up on the computer, but want to try “vectorizing” on the computer too. Thanks for any info. Lisa Berman
Thanks Lisa. I draw with the pen tool in Illustrator over the top of a scanned pencil drawing. If you do a really clean drawing you can livetrace it, but I prefer the pen tool for smooth bezier curves and minimal points.
