Develop a Content Repurposing Workflow

May 28, 2022

Most content creators spend so much time and effort creating their weekly blog posts, videos, or podcast episodes from scratch that there's usually no energy left to promote them, let alone repurpose them across multiple channels.

"Content repurposing is about getting the maximum return from every single piece of content you create"—Amy Woods

I used to spend most of my time writing 3000-word blog posts that nobody read, so I spent just as much time re-writing the content for other channels to promote the blog post.

Then it hit me: I found myself repeatedly doing the same steps every week, and you know what they say—work smarter, not harder. So I decided to systemise the steps I was taking and refine and improve the system over time.

The resulting Content Genie tool is a game-changer, and I still get a kick out of using it. As a result of creating and repurposing targeted, engaging content every week, I built my business Instagram following to 115K+, which led to a thriving online membership, and the best part? It only takes a few hours per week.

You pour your heart and soul into every piece of content you create, and it's heartbreaking when your ideas and strategies get lost or hidden. But, unfortunately, if people don't have the time or capacity to consume the long-form version, or worse still, they don't see it on their channel, your nuggets of wisdom are lost forever.

Well my friend, let me help you develop your very own content repurposing workflow by following these simple steps.

STEP ONE: Set clear content goals

Start by getting clear on your content marketing goals for this month. Even if you have nothing to launch or sell, you should still focus on a conversion goal, such as more pins, followers, or likes. It helps you focus your content to be super specific and helpful to a targeted group of people.

STEP TWO: Choose your channels

Start by choosing a core channel—this should be long-form, so a blog, podcast or video channel. Next, you can choose the pillar channels where you will repurpose the content, such as Medium, LinkedIn, or Slideshare. From there, you can select the micro-channels such as Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, where you will promote your core and pillar content. STEP THREE: Create a monthly content strategy

I have a free worksheet that helps you develop a goal-driven monthly content strategy, but you can always create your own spreadsheet. Once you have established your channels, it becomes a quick and easy process to change your goals, ask new questions and create a new content plan every month. Click here to download the worksheet.

STEP FOUR: Answer the right questions

The best core content answers questions your audience is already asking. Whether they are searching on Google or Pinterest or asking in Facebook groups, once you know your goals for the month and who you want to help, it's easy to find out what they're typing into search engines. Start with Google and Pinterest. Type your topic into the search bar and see what suggestions come up. You can also use the paid tool Answer the Public if you want more detail on phrasing the questions.

STEP FIVE: Use a content framework

By creating your core content using a pre-written structure, you create the content in such a way as to have segregated bits and pieces to move around. This process makes repurposing your content so much easier because it still makes sense when you pull out discreet sections and post them out of context. It also speeds up the process of writing and keeps your long-form content well-structured and on topic. I use the content framework I've developed for my Content Genie tool. All of my blog posts and podcasts are created using this framework.

STEP SIX: Build your core content

When I create content using the Content Genie framework, I start with the topic and then get clear on the keyword. For example, the keyword for this blog post is content repurposing workflow. Identifying this first helps me create sentences that flow smoothly and include the keyword multiple times for SEO purposes. I also find a positioning quote, define the problem and a solution, highlight the core question the content is answering and highlight some of the key takeaways. Then, by creating my content using the framework inside the Content Genie, I can easily repurpose those sections later.

STEP SEVEN: Repurpose your core content

Once you have created your core long-form content using a framework, you can begin rearranging the sections and pulling out the highlights, quotes, and steps and reusing them in various ways. The Content Genie does this for you automatically by rearranging the sections using some clever coding. However, you can always pick and choose your favourite sections to reuse across your other content channels.

STEP EIGHT: Use content templates

If you find yourself repeating tasks each week, it's good to make templates and follow a system to save time and streamline the processes. First, I use the Content Genie to build my content; then, I have a series of graphic templates set up in Canva that I can reuse each week and a spreadsheet to track my dates, times, links, and captions so that I can streamline my content repurposing workflow each week.

STEP NINE: Use a content scheduler

Once your writing and content are repurposed, you can easily follow your monthly content strategy to schedule your weekly content. A pro tip to speed things up is to use a content scheduling tool like Buffer, Later, or Planoly so that you can schedule on the weekend and forget about it for a week.

So that's it for the steps. Imagine sitting down at the computer every week, and instead of staring at a blank Google doc, you can open a structured framework that helps you build your content from the ground up. An even better feeling is knowing your content repurposing workflow will take care of the content repurposing for you. All you need to do is fill in the blanks and hit publish.

How much time would you get back every week if you had a streamlined content repurposing workflow?
