Meet Three Creative Superheroes

Oct 18, 2022

Over the years, I have been lucky enough to work with a group of creatives who let me experiment on them.

I discovered my own Creative Superpower in 2016 and realised it was to help other confused creatives discover the true purpose of their creative gifts, so I started with the women closest to me.

Aurelie Maron, Alejandra Ramirez-Vidal and Libbi Reed were all graphic design students of mine at one time or another. I taught design and Griffith University for many years, and these three always stood out to me as star students who just needed clarity and guidance, and they had the potential to become superstars.

Unfortunately, all three suffered from shiny object syndrome and paralysis analysis at one point or another. It drove me crazy watching them flounder in roles where they did not fully utilise their gifts, so I knew I had to help them discover their Creative Superpowers.

1. Aurelie Maron

Aurelie was an exceptionally talented lettering artist, but her first few jobs after graduating from university didn't make use of these skills. Instead, she worked at a graphic design agency where she was paid for her time, not the value she could create.

I worked with Aurelie to discover where her true passions and interests lie, but also how she could best help others. The overlap of her creative superpower came when she embraced her passion for lettering and her skills for developing clever lettering techniques and teaching them to others.

As a result, she built an avid social media following and developed a range of masterclasses, digital lettering brushes, and online courses. She has doubled her "real job" income, built a profile where she is valued for her creativity, not her time, and enjoys going to "work" every day in her home studio.

"Before I discovered Dominique's Creative Superpower method, I struggled with not knowing what to do with my skills and abilities. At first, I was concerned that I wouldn't be "good enough" to find my own Creative Superpower, but thanks to Dominique, I've discovered what I was good at and how I could give it a purpose. I can say that this process could be life-changing for anyone."—Aurelie Maron.

2. Alejandra Ramirez-Vidal

Alejandra Ramirez-Vidal loves to travel, and whilst she loved all her design day jobs, it became clear that she was only working to save up enough money to travel again. She also loves photography and design and helping people. She had run several fundraising exhibitions of her photography to bring water and supplies to the tribes back in her home country of Colombia.

Alejandra became frustrated whenever she neglected any of these passions, so we went on a retreat to Bali (because she loves to travel), and I took her through the Creative Superpower process over several days. It became clear that Alejandra's superpower was to travel with a purpose and teach others how to do the same.

Fueled with a newfound clarity of purpose, Alejandra built a van and went on a road trip that has taken her all around Australia and New Zealand, with several side trips to Europe and South America. She has been travelling non-stop as a digital nomad for 728 days and amassed a social media following of half a million, opening up a wealth of partnership opportunities. She is also developing a course that helps others learn how to travel with a purpose, as she has done.

3. Libbi Reed

Libbi Reed is a curious creative and suffers from shiny object syndrome like no one I have ever met. Unfortunately, the poor thing is worse than me, and I'm pretty bad. Libbi struggled to gain traction because she would hop from project to project and collect a variety of new skills, but this was masking a crisis of confidence. By constantly looking to master a new skill or technique, she would postpone having to create anything of her own.

Libbi came to Bali with Alejandra and me and went through the same Creative Superpower process at the retreat. She discovered how her perfectionism was covering up her desire to express herself creatively, so she went on a journey of self-discovery, which ultimately led to completing a doctoral study into creative self-expression.

Libbi uses sketch notes in particular because the speed helped her overcome perfectionist tendencies and allowed her to capture thoughts and ideas as she had them in a structured framework. Libbi has developed a range of digital stickers and planners to help her quickly capture daily thoughts on the iPad, and she is creating a course to help others express themselves using sketch notes.

I hope you enjoyed meeting these three creative superheroes. If you would like to go through the process they did, I have developed a series of four workshops where I take confused creatives like you through the process of discovering your Creative Superpower, why you have it, who you can help with it, and how you can use it to build a purpose-led business.
