Episode 44. From Designer to Designer Boss with Emma Kate
Apr 16, 2022
EPISODE 44: In this episode of the Creative Spark Podcast, I sit down with Emma Kate to discuss her journey from Designer to Designer Boss.
Emma is a graphic designer turned web designer and describes herself as a go-to WordPress educator and geeky girl next door for designers, ready to evolve into a successful web developer.
Through her game-changing e-courses, Emma helps designers unwrap the mysteries, methods, and magic of web design to build beautiful and truly brilliant WordPress websites.
Emma and her creative partner Anna Dower are about to kick off their fourth Designer Boss Summit—a three-day digital conference to inspire, motivate and teach web and graphic designer entrepreneurs how to work smarter and not harder in their online businesses.
Web design and funnel-building used to be complicated, but there are so many great pieces of software out there now that anyone can do it.
Since Emma graduated from university, web design went from being coding and highly technical to super simple. As the web evolved, all these fantastic tools that were designed specifically for designers to be able to build websites were released.
It means that anyone can build WordPress websites without coding. If you don’t want to touch code, you don’t have to, not with page builders like Divi and Elementor.
Emma found herself building websites for other designers. Still, once she realised that creatives could do this themselves, she had the idea to build an online course teaching people, and that’s how she got into this whole world of funnels and using funnels to get people to buy her courses.
If you structure your signature course the right way, your roadmap for the course can be used as a lead magnet or opt-in.
Emma’s first opt-in was a one-page roadmap breaking down the nine modules of her course. Emma’s signature course, “Be the boss of WordPress”, teaches designers how to build a WordPress website from start to finish, and there are nine steps.
Emma tells us it is still the most popular opt-in on her website. Obviously, it’s tweaked and changed over the years, and she thinks it looks prettier now, but it’s essentially the same thing she launched all those years ago.
Organising a summit is a tremendous list-building exercise that builds authority and gets you talking to authorities in the industry.
Emma says she has to pinch herself when she gets to talk to people in the industry that she would never have dreamed of calling a peer. The summit is also a significant cash injection for her business. There is a lot of work initially, figuring out the systems and workflow, but Emma recommends them if they’re goals that you have on your list.
