13. You can be skilful enough without mastery

Aug 31, 2020

EPISODE 13: As a Creative Entrepreneur, it is often a struggle to keep on top of all the skills you need to develop to build a creative business. We are not born with skills—they are developed through experiences in life and work. Learning a new skill builds confidence and based on our environment and aptitude, and some skills are easier to learn than others.

We also learn best when we are engaged, enjoying a process, or perceive a benefit. We might learn a new skill by observation, experience, or through active learning.

By identifying what skills you have already mastered, you can understand the unique composition for your Creative Superpower.

Types of Skills

Skills are grouped into six broad types: Labor Skills; Life Skills; People Skills; Social Skills; Soft Skills and Hard Skills.

  • Labor Skills generally refer to occupations that are economically productive, such as electricians, chefs, bakers, carpenters and so on. These skills can be learned ‘on the job’ or through trade school and apprenticeships.
  • Life Skills are usually learned from experience or mentoring, they tend not to be formally taught. These are a combination of technical and interpersonal skills and involve managing complex daily problems.
  • People Skills include psychological and social skills and the ability to build relationships with others and understand and moderate our own behaviours and emotions.
  • Social Skills are more specifically to do with interaction and communication with others. The ability to understand verbal and non-verbal communication, social rules and socialisation.
  • Soft Skills are a combination of interpersonal skills as well as our attitudes, emotional intelligence, and career attributes. These relate directly to our personality and are difficult to measure.
  • Hard Skills are quantifiable and measurable and relate to a specific task or situation.
