14. Prioritise your creativity

EPISODE 14: In this day and age, the methods of prioritising that worked for our parents, and grandparents no longer work for us. There is much more other people need us to do, and so many more ways they can get us to do it. However, putting others first means putting your creativity last.

Opening doors for people, only speaking when spoken to, fetching and carrying for adults; these are all wonderful lessons to teach us respect and responsibility as children. However, as adults, putting other people first continues to influence our behaviour. It manifests itself as getting the kids ready for school, responding to urgent emails, saying “yes” when asked to do something for someone.

These are all examples of prioritising other people’s needs over your own. Under the guise of politeness, respect, and responsibility, society conditions us to always put other people’s needs before our own.

Learning to accept that you will never get it all done and learning instead to prioritise your own needs over the needs of others are two essential skills you will need to develop to claw back more time for yourself every day.
