16. Test your business ideas

Sep 07, 2020

EPISODE 16: When you are building your creative side business, you need to be creating products and services that people actually need. You might be super passionate and interested in an idea, but if no one else is, you have a hobby, not a business. Conversely, you might have skills or solutions that people want or need, but if they don’t light you up, you probably have what I like to call "a job".
In episodes 3 and 4 of the creative spark podcast, we talked about skills sets and natural aptitudes. Your creative side-business should be built on a foundation of things you are capable of doing. You also need to know where your zone of genius lies so that you can begin to outsource the other components of running a successful business, freeing you up to concentrate on what you’re best at.

In episodes 7 and 8 of the podcast, we talked about how challenges define you and that overcoming your core struggles is the key to understanding how you can help guide others down the same path. When you are building your creative side business, it is important to solve the challenges which matter to you the most and then teach others how to overcome those same struggles. The idea that people have walked the path before us gives us confidence to follow them.

In episodes 11 and 12 of the podcast, we talked about how your passions will keep you motivated throughout the ups and downs of a creative side business. When you are building your creative side business, you need to be passionate about the work in order to sustain you. Business is tough, there will be days when you're dealing with things that don't light you up. So overall, if there's no passion for the bigger picture, it will be easy to give up and walk away.

Ideally, your business idea should combine all of these aspects of your life and story. Your skills and aptitudes, particularly around overcoming the challenges you have faced in the past, combined with passions and interests that keep you motivated through the ups and downs.

In today’s podcast episode, you will discover:
