18. It is important to forgive yourself

EPISODE 18: Traditional education systems praise the correct solution and discourage mistakes. It can be challenging to move into a creative headspace where mistakes are actively encouraged. To be creatively successful, however, you must shift from a desire to validate your talent and intelligence to stretching to learn something new. This means being prepared to make mistakes.

As a society, we praise talent over hard work. Creatives must shift instead to valuing experimentation over always being right.

If left unchecked, it is possible to waste months of mental energy over-thinking mistakes. Without the ability to forgive yourself, you never truly move forward. Even after “solving” a thing you might have done “wrong”, you will still carry the guilt of making a mistake in the first place. It is not uncommon to feel stupid and punish yourself for it with negative thoughts.

Without tolerance for mistakes and a desire to fail frequently, you will never be free to experiment or grow fully.
