EPISODE 22: Why is the beginning of a new year so popular for making resolutions and fresh starts? What is it about a new year that brings out the resolve to take out gym memberships, start diets, and quit smoking? Why can’t we harness this energy every day?
We also use the New Year as a chance to reflect. Many people write long letters to the family as a wrap-up to their year. We look back at the highs and lows; we reflect on what happened, and this informs how we look forward to the future and all that the new year will bring. We also try and go on a holiday over these break periods as a way to restart the refresh the new work year as well.
The sad truth about new year’s resolutions is the fresh start energy only lasts a few days. A feeling of failure is what stalls any creative program—to resolve to start again once a year is not enough.
By taking the time to understand your natural energy cycles, you can learn how to replenish your energy before you give up. Unfortunately, humans don’t come with a built-in energy gauge. A little dashboard light doesn’t go on when it is time to fill up with fuel. You need to monitor your energy levels and fill them up daily.
The good news is, we can utilise shorter cycles as a way of kick-starting our motivation for change.
In today’s podcast episode, you will discover:
- Why you should use temporal milestones to kick-start your motivation
