Episode 39. Create your own niche

Jul 17, 2021

EPISODE 39: In this episode of the Creative Spark podcast, we take a look at how you can stop trying to conform to an existing niche and create your own niche instead.

Many creatives spend a lot of time and energy trying to find the perfect niche. But, unfortunately, this usually leads to paralysis analysis.

The inability to choose one means that most creative entrepreneurs stop and start their business ideas because they're not sure they are going in the right direction. If you're like me, I've wasted a lot of energy and time changing and pivoting my niche because the one I chose didn't fit comfortably.

Unfortunately, the experts don't tell us that there are two methods you can use to select your niche, the subset method and the overlap method. So, if this is you, stay with me because I'm about to share with you which method works best for multi-passionate creatives and how you can stop trying to choose a niche and create your own niche instead. “No niche is too small if it is yours”—Seth Godin

For many years, I suffered from shiny object syndrome. I was forever pivoting and changing my niche as my ideas grew and evolved. Finally, I became frustrated because I was trying to focus, but I couldn't decide because I'm a multi-passionate creative.

I fell victim to the idea that to be successful in business, you had to choose a niche and become a recognised expert. I even did a PhD in tactile typography whilst building the Typism community, hoping to give me some clarity and authority around my niche. When I combined everything that I was passionate about, I finally felt comfortable owning my unique niche instead of finding one and claiming it.

I know it all sounds overwhelming, but don't worry; I've made it easy for you with a worksheet. Click here to download it.
